In their latest assessment of the 2024/25 safrinha corn crop released this week, the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) estimated that farmers in the state will plant 6.79 million hectares of safrinha corn (16.77 million acres). Mato Grosso is the largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil followed by the state of Parana.

Conab is slightly more optimistic concerning the corn acreage and they are estimating that farmers in Mato Grosso will plant 6.92 million hectares of safrinha corn in 2024/25 (17.09 million acres), which would be down 63,000 hectares or 0.9% compared to 2023/24.

The reduction is the result of the delayed start to soybean planting in September that will delay some of the safrinha corn planting past the ideal planting window next January and February. Farmers are also concerned that in some areas of the state, the corn prices have not improved enough to generate a profit growing corn.

Below is a map of Mato Grosso and Imea's estimate of the 2024/25 safrinha corn acreage by region. The title is "Corn Area and Production in Mato Grosso by Region From Imea for the 2024/25 Crop." The regions are as follows: Region 1 is northwest, 2 is north, 3 is northeast, 4 is mid-north, 5 is southeast, 6 is south-central, and 7 is west.
