In areas of southern Brazil where the first corn crop is grown, the weather has improved over the past few weeks and there is more rain in the forecast. Even with some previous areas of dryness in Parana, the corn in the state is still rated 96% good.
The first corn crop in southern Brazil was 94% planted as of late last week according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 1% for the week,
Parana - The first corn crop in Parana was 100% planted, 53% in vegetative development, 33% pollinating, and 13 filling grain as of earlier last week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). The corn is rated 4% average and 96% good.
Safrinha production - Brazil's eventual corn production will depend on the safrinha corn crop and prospects for the crop have improved. Mato Grosso is the largest safrinha corn producing state and the soybean planting in the state was concluded ahead of average, which should allow for the safrinha corn to be planted in a timely manner. Domestic corn prices in Brazil have improved which could give an added incentive to plant safrinha corn.
Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state and its safrinha corn should be planted on time. The big unknown at this point is what the weather will be next February when most of the safrinha corn will be planted. The biggest concern is if wet weather will delay the soybean harvest and the safrinha corn planting.
Conab will issue their December Crop Report on Thursday, December 12th. They are currently estimating the corn crop at 119.8 million tons. Agroconsult estimated the Brazilian corn crop last week at 132.7 million tons.
