Brazil received a lot of "off season" rain last week. The heaviest amounts were once again in southern Brazil, especially Parana and southern Mato Grosso do Sul, but they also received rain in the dry areas of central Brazil including Goias, Mato Grosso, and Minas Gerais. Usually, the dry season is in full force at this time of the year, so these rains are very unusual. Metrologists in Brazil attributing these rains to the strengthening El Nino.

Most of the safrinha corn is too far along in its maturity to be helped by the rain, but some of the latest planted corn did benefit from the moisture. Therefore, the Brazilian corn estimate was increased 1.0 million tons this week to 139.0 million. Conab increased their 2025/26 Brazil corn estimate slightly in their June Crop Report to 140.4 million tons.

Safrinha corn in Brazil was 8.4% harvested as of late last week compared to 5.2% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 4% for the week. Harvesting activities have been slowed by persistent wet weather in southern Brazil with more rain predicted for the second half of June. These "out of season rains" are being attributed to the strengthening El Nino.

Mato Grosso - Safrinha corn in Mato Grosso was 11.2% harvested as of late last week compared to 7.2% last year and 13.3% average according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). The most advanced harvest is in the mid-north region where the corn is 16.5% harvested. The slowest harvest is in the southeastern region with 3.3% harvested.

Parana - Parana has received a lot of rain over the last few weeks which has kept the corn at high moisture and slowed the harvest progress. Farmers have harvested less than 1% of their safrinha corn while they wait for the grain moisture to decline.

Below is the corn harvest progress in Mato Grosso for June 12, 2026 from Imea.
