AgRural Predicts 2026/27 Soy Acreage up 0.9%, Lowest in 20 Years

In their first assessment of the 2026/27 Brazilian growing season, AgRural is predicting that the soybean acreage in Brazil will increase 0.9% or 443,000 hectares to 49.0 million hectares (121.0 million acres). While this would be the 20th consecutive increase in Brazilian soybean acreage, it would also be the smallest increase in 20 years.

Factors such as low profitability, high input costs, increased indebtedness, low commodity prices, and a lack of available credit have turned Brazilian farmers more cautious in their expansion plans.

The developing El Nino could also add uncertainty to the 2026/27 growing season. El Nino usually results in above average rainfall in southern Brazil and below average rainfall in central and northern Brazil. For the last several months, southern Brazil has received much above average rainfall, which if they continue, could impede spring planting. In contrast, planting in central and northern Brazil could be delayed by dry conditions and the summer crops could experience longer rain-free intervals due to the weather phenomenon.
